Erell Ranson – Where The Clouds Are [MySelf Recordings]

Erell Ranson gets deep on his own MySelf imprint, and he just keeps getting better. ‘A Different Light’ is a really nice, deep electro-tinged thing which he splices with spooky bass lines and emotional synth lines. On the flip, Paul Mac has remixed for ‘A Different Light’ that will take the track onto any floors. Finally, ‘Where The Clouds Are’ is in the same vein but with a more melodic feel. Another very good release !

Tracklisting:

  • A1. A Different Light
  • B1. A Different Light (Paul Mac remix)
  • B2. Where The Clouds Are

Lee Holman – Travelling EP [Mowar]

Ireland’s young gun Lee Holman takes on a melodic voyage on the Mowar thing. A good, well-rounded package – Very playable / versatile. Very atmospheric / gorgeous. Driving without speeding, deep without being impenetrable. ‘Depart’ is the one for me here, an epic journey that is right up my street. Hurrah !

Matt Chester – Endless Days [11th Hour]

[ ehr-006 ]

11th Hour at its finest. Matt Chester is back on his home and in fine form. ‘Cold Restraint’ is exactly what I love about techno – it features his trademark Detroit-influenced lush pads and melodies, floating / ebbing over rough beats. Yes, yes yes and yes !! On the A-side, ‘Kick It’ comes in original stellar electro funk and a fantastic DJ 3000 remix. Motech head honcho DJ 3000 excels with an epic interpretation that is simply outstanding. All in all a top notch package.

Tracklisting:

  • A1. Kick It
  • A2. Kick It (DJ 3000′s Motech remix)
  • B1. Cold Restraint

Santiago Salazar / Silent Servant – Santuario / Lo Profundo [Historia y Violencia]

Santiago Salazar and Silent Servant have launched a brand new label, Historia y Violencia (History and Violence). This release in particular stuck out for me because of the Hard Wax-ish qualities and deep and dark atmosphere, which segues neatly into the Historia y Violencia signature track with its many influences worn lightly and blended successfully. Santiago drops a heavy minimal-techno with a twisted groove, which builds into pure electronic madness. Silent Servant brings a proper deep and dubby techno, which draws you right in from the start. Excellent.

  • 01. Santiago Salazar – Santuario
  • 02. Silent Servant – Lo Profundo

The Youngsters – Babylon Superstars [20:20 Vision]

[ VIS 168 ]

For the younger dancers on today’s floors, the standout track ‘Babylon Superstars’ is positively modern minimal and deserving of some kind of Isolée-esque treatment. I prefer ‘Fukuoaka Underground’ here though – deep, emotional French techno with a large dollop of Motor City. An absolute beauty.

Tracklisting:

  • 01. Babylon Superstars
  • 02. Babylon Superstars (Simon Baker’s Infant mix)
  • 03. Fukuoaka Underground

Pedro Cali – Misty [Fine Art]

[ FA08 ]

Pedro Cali doesn’t need any introduction, you already know that he’s more than capable of coming up with a surefire winner. Well he’s gone and done it again in its original form, this single makes you feel exactly that; ‘Misty’ so simple but insistently brilliant – proper deep techno at its best. ‘The Way’ is the way with his trademark Motown-influenced funkiness that twists and turns. Finally ‘8 Days A Week’ is a proper deep mixture of techno attitude with house sensibilities. The two other remixes by Rodriguez Jr. and Duplex are also fucking good. Rodriguez Jr. remix is a brilliant piece of deep tech-house with a Border Community style moody hook. Beautiful indeed. The Duplex way takes the original and bends it perfectly for quality floors. It’s really powerful ! Ahh Perdo, Olivier, John and Chris, these Beneluxians can do no wrong !

Tracklisting:

  • 01. Misty
  • 02. Misty (Rodriguez Jr. remix)
  • 03. The Way
  • 04. The Way (The Duplex way)
  • 05. 8 Days A Week

Rennie Foster – Good Time Charlie [Subject Detroit]

[ SUB-024 ]

More excellent quality stuff from Subject Detroit; GTC itself is a slow-burner and breathes old-school deep house and new-school minimal techno with incredible musicianship and immaculate production. Aux 88 have given it a ludicrous ghetto techno interpretation. DJ Bone’s deep concentration is one to get well and truly lost in only to re-emerge 12 minutes later to wonder where exactly the time went.

Tracklisting:

  • A1. GTC – Original
  • A2. Aux 88’s Zoom mix

Stephen Brown – Subject Scotland 2 [Subject Detroit]

[ SUB-025 ]

Stephen Brown returns to Subject Detroit with a fantastic four tracker of raw and jacking techno funk music. Absolutely stunning A side – I have been hammering both tracks for a while now. Our Soul has been remade and improved for the dancefloor, deep, emotional techno with a twist of Detroit influenced soul. Keygroups grooves like a mutha ! On the flip both tracks are as nice – delicious yet dark, dubbed out house with Chicago licks, swirling techno synths and relentless driving basslines. All in all this is a great package from a great producer.

Tracklisting:

  • A1. Our Soul
  • A2. Keygroups

Subject Detroit with yet another corking release – ‘Comatose’ comes with Donna Black, Aaron-Carl and DJ Bone mixes. The Original Slumber is a great pounding groover with a lurching synth that builds beautifully. It reminds me a little of early Jeff Mills. I can’t choose one of remixes, I love all of them !

Ican – Pa’ Mi Gente [Planet E]

[ PLE65302-1 ]

Absolutely stunning "Chiclet’s Theme" – I have been playing this for months now. Oh oh ! Santiago and Esteban deliver a stunning eight minutes of analogue techno wonderment. A real techno soul with a gorgeous strings hook that really rocks the spot on a visceral level. One of the best things Ican boys have ever done. The A-side Pá Mi Gente is a fantastic dancefloor latin / techno hybrid thing as always, but it shows amazing maturity and class. And Carl Craig has delivered a corking dub mix for this BRILLIANT single too.

DJ Mark Flash – Brasilia EP [Underground Resistance]

[ UR-078 ]
